Fidux bounced back to form at Sandown last Saturday, to finish third in a hot handicap for juvenile hurdlers. Fidux did really well to get involved in the finish, as he endured a terrible run through the race and got into all sorts of trouble. When he made a bad mistake down the back straight it looked like it might be game over, but he started to make ground turning for home and ran on really well up the hill. His previous run at the Cheltenham Festival in March didn't go to plan as he ran far too freely up in front, but this was much more like it and Fidux now heads off on his summer break. Vibrato Valtat ran on the same card, but never really looked like getting involved. He too is likely to head off on holiday shortly. The 2016/17 Jumps season was another fantastic one for Axom and its owners, with some truly memorable performances from the horses. High Secret's emergence as a leading hurdler after a year on the sidelines was a great story, as was Irving's hard-fought second win, in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Ziga Boy became the first horse in the 70 year history of the Great Yorkshire Chase to win the race twice, while the consistent Shotgun Paddy continued to give his owners plenty of fun. Buster Thomas looks a nice prospect for Emma Lavelle, while Fidux and the previously mentioned Ziga Boy highlighted the skills of Alan King.

Tuesday 21 March, 2017
High Secret landed his second win of the year on 20 March at Taunton, in a novices' hurdle over 2m½f. High Secret jumped off in the middle of the pack under Sam Twiston-Davies and he travelled well off a very slow pace. High Secret took a narrow lead coming to the last, but landed on all fours. He kept on very well under hands and heels to beat the second favourite, Boagrius (who received 9lbs), by half a length at odds of 4/5. The slow pace would not have allowed him to use his stamina, and also his jumping was cumbersome, due to a lack of momentum caused by the slow pace. Sam did not look in trouble at any stage of the race, and both he and Paul Nicholls were delighted with the win.

Wednesday 8 March, 2017
Six days is still a long time in horseracing terms, but all being well, Lifeboat Mona will line up in the Grade 1 David Nicholson Mares' hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next Tuesday. Lifeboat Mona, who goes well fresh, has had just two runs this season; her last being at Sandown in early January. It will be fascinating to see how she copes with this step-up in class, but she fully deserves her place in the field and we wish her and her owners a huge amount of luck. Paul Nicholls was very happy with Lifeboat Mona's piece of work on Saturday morning, so it is a case of all systems go. Also next week, Fidux is a likely runner in the Grade 3 Fred Winter Hurdle on Wednesday and Lac Fontana could run on either Wednesday or Friday. It is a great honour to have three likely runners next week and, with lots of lovely young horses at home too, our string looks in great shape.

Ziga Boy became the first horse in the Sky Bet Chase's seventy-one year history to win it twice after an impressive performance at Doncaster. The flying grey jumped immaculately for Tom Bellamy and he never saw another horse. Trainer Alan King was delighted and Ziga Boy may be considered for the Grand National or Scottish National later this Spring.
Friday 27 January, 2017
High Secret ran out an impressive winner on his hurdling debut at Taunton today for trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Sam Twiston-Davies. High Secret was a very decent horse on the Flat and it looks as though he could become a useful hurdler after his eye-catching run.

Fidux made it two out of two in juvenile hurdles at Kempton yesterday, with a very polished performance under Tom Cannon. Fidux won narrowly on his debut in Axom colours at Catterick in November, but he looked very impressive this time, jumping economically and staying on strongly in the home straight to beat the odds on favourite, Poker Play. Trainer Alan King may now consider either the Triumph Hurdle or the Fred Winter Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Buster Thomas made the perfect start to his rules career by winning impressively at Lingfield on Saturday. A half-brother to Axom's Grade 3 chase winner, Shotgun Paddy, Buster Thomas has always looked like a promising recruit and he didn't put a foot wrong under Tom Scudamore. Trainer Emma Lavelle was delighted and her excellent season continues. At Doncaster, Ziga Boy ran a very brace race to finish third in a competitive handicap chase. It was great to see Ziga Boy run well after unseating at Aintree last weekend.

Fidux made a winning start over hurdles at Catterick today in an interesting juvenile contest under Wayne Hutchinson. Fidux jumped superbly and made good progress up the home straight to gradually reel in the tough Walsingham Grange. Irving showed tremendous guts to land the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday for the second time. Irving, ridden beautifully by star of the future, Harry Cobden, looked to be in trouble down the back straight, but he picked up stylishly as the field turned for home and just held off the late challenge of Grade One winner, Apple's Jade. This was a fantastic performance from Irving, who also landed Newcastle's feature hurdle race in 2014, and he will now have a short break before running again in the New Year.
Thursday 24 November, 2016
Declared Runner - IRVING, trained by Paul Nicholls, is declared to run in the 2.55 at Newcastle on Saturday 26 November, the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle, which he previously won in 2014.

Lifeboat Mona and Tagrita both won in great style on Saturday on their seasonal debuts. Tagrita was having her first run over fences and she took to the larger obstacles extremely well, jumping efficiently under Connor O'Farrell at Huntingdon. She battled really well in the home straight to fend off the challenge of the favourite, The Organist to record an excellent victory - her sixth in Axom colours. Lifeboat Mona has always been a talented mare and she looked all class in the mares' handicap hurdle at Ascot, running away after the last for an easy win. She will stick to hurdles for the moment and she can hopefully progress to even greater things.

Both Vibrato Valtat and Javert have been given big race entries for later this month, as the Jumps season starts to hit full swing. Vibrato Valtat ran really well on his seasonal debut at Aintree ten days ago and he is a possible for the Grade 3 BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday 12 November. The race was formerly known as the Paddy Power Gold Cup and is one of the highlights of the early Jumps season. Axom trainer Alan King won the race last year with Annacotty, and the previous year the contest went to Paul Nicholls (Caid Du Berlais). Emma Lavelle was hoping to run Javert in the same race, but has opted to enter the son of Kayf Tara in the Hennessy Gold Cup instead on Saturday 26 November. This will be a big ask for Javert, but the flat track should suit him and Emma is looking for a prep race imminently.

Vibrato Valtat jumped beautifully under Nick Scholfield when finishing third in the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase at Aintree on Sunday, which was an encouraging start to the season. Nick was deputising for the injured Sam Twiston-Davies, who is currently recuperating from a ruptured spleen, suffered at Chepstow two weeks previously. Vibrato travelled very well into contention, leading at the final open ditch, two fences from home, but he was out-sprinted to the line by the consistent pair Third Intention and God's Own.

With stable jockey Sam Twiston-Davies still on the sidelines, it is not known who will pick up the ride on Vibrato Valtat, but Paul Nicholls is likely to have plenty of options.
