We recently received the sad news of the passing of Deano's Beeno, a retired Axom horse who was a top staying hurdler of the late '90s and early 2000s. Initially trained by Mark Johnston for his previous owners, Deano's Beeno ran 22 times on the Flat and won one race - a 1m 2f maiden at Nottingham in October 1994. In October 1996, Deano's Beeno was offered for sale at Tattersalls and Martin Pipe snapped him up for 24,000 guineas on behalf of Axom. Less than two months later, Deano's Beeno cruised to a 30-length victory at Newton Abbot, the start of a wonderful career over hurdles. Incredibly, his next race was the Grade 1 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March 1997, in which he finished a respectable seventh. Rated 171 at his best, Deano's Beeno's finest hour came at Ascot, on a murky December day just before Christmas in 2002. Sent off at 14/1, the then-ten-year-old galloped his rivals into the ground and defeated the seemingly undefeatable French raider, Baracouda. This was a career-defining moment for Deano's Beeno and a richly-deserved Grade 1 win for his Axom owners. He retired in April 2004 after a remarkable career that spanned ten years and 57 career starts. Following his retirement, Deano's Beeno headed to Greatwood, near Marlborough in Wiltshire, where he found a new niche in parading on behalf of Greatwood, at various charity events and on racecourses up and down the country. Greatwood founder Helen Yeadon paid the following tribute: 'For the 17 years he was with us, pretty much the world revolved around him, he knew it, we knew it and he shall be greatly missed, not least by me. Out of all the hundreds of horses I have looked after, he was my favourite, largely because he made me chuckle and I admired his great intelligence. RIP Deano's Beeno.'

The Axom LXXI syndicate's Makanah has made a fine start to his 2020 campaign. Earlier this month, he posted a career-best performance when beating a useful field to win a Class 2 handicap at Newmarket's Guineas meeting. For this success, the progressive five-year-old son of Mayson's official rating was increased to 101 by the BHA handicapper, which could provide the springboard to further valuable handicaps, or a step up to Listed races and possibly beyond.

There is much uncertainty in the world at the moment, but we look forward to things returning to normal in due course and some exciting racing later in the year. Most of the Axom horses are preparing for their summer breaks, although we will hopefully be able to look forward to some Flat action with the likes of Makanah and Fidux. In the meantime, stay safe and well.

Falco Blitz ran another fine race at Kempton on Saturday, 14 March, when finishing fifth in the Grade 3 EBF NH Novices' Handicap Hurdle Final. The race had been rescheduled due to waterlogged ground at Sandown the previous weekend and although the ground was drying all the time at Kempton, it was still pretty testing. Already a winner at Fakenham and Ascot this season, Falco Blitz has been remarkably consistent in his five runs this term and he could have one more outing if racing resumes in May.
